Telefónica has closed an agreement with Mediapro for the acquisition of the broadcasting rights of the Champions League and the Europa League in the Spanish residential market for the next three seasons (2018-2021) for 1,080 million euros (360 million each) .
The estimated net cost of the investment in the rights to the Champions League, the Europa League and LaLiga (awarded this week) increases by 5% compared to the last season of both competitions, which represents an impact of around 40 million euros on the first season. From the second, the cost will remain stable.
After this, Telefónica has 100% of the rights to Binance App Users Data paid football in the residential market, as indicated to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).
For its part, Mediapro will manage the rights of public establishments and will maintain the dissemination of the two competitions through beIN Connect, while at the same time it will broadcast one match per day of the Spanish teams in the Europa League.
The formalization of the agreement on the broadcasting rights of the Champions League and the Europa League is subject to the mandatory authorization from UEFA, which is expected in the coming days. This total amount associated with this operation includes the total rights that may be resold to other interested operators.
The signed agreement includes the sharing of advertising revenues from the new channels that are launched in the coming weeks under the Movistar label.
With this operation, Telefónica completes its sports offer after being awarded, by LaLiga, the broadcasting rights for the nine paid matches of each day of LaLiga Santander for the 2019-2022 seasons. In both cases, Telefónica can design and develop the content.
